We were officially founded and registered on March 10th 2008 as an independent, nonreligious social service functioning as a nonprofit charity. Our charitable activities are motivated by caring for single mothers who are raising their children alone, who do not know their rights and are suffering from child labor, child poverty, and sexual exploitation. It is an organization funded and driven by the energy of selfless people who seek your cooperative effort, to help the needy in developing countries.

This charity is based on the success of helping one single mother raising her six children by herself. Our mission is to help other single mothers in need. It all started one day in November 2005; when one of our board directors who was trying to reconnect with her childhood caretaker, for over a decade when she was a child. Her name was Amina.

Amina was a very strong willed lady from Myanmar "Burma".  While growing up she got very attached to her, as she would walk her to school and was very protective of her.  After school hours as a child she would sometimes play with her daughter Munni who was close to her age. When she relocated to America she eventually lost touch with them, as they moved on to other employers.

Over the years, she tried to inquire about Amina and her family, but no one seemed to know about their whereabouts. Over a decade or more passed by, until she received their whereabouts from an aunt who accidentally met them at their new employers.

When she visited overseas after nearly 15 years, she looked forward to reconnecting with Amina and Munni to see how they were doing. She felt very happy, yet sad seeing Amina, as she had aged and was close to 80 years of age. Amina was happy to see her, but had problems with her memory.  Her daughter Munni was unrecognizable and looked 20 years older due to the hardships in her life.  Munni said her husband recently had a stroke and left them to go his village where he came from.

Munni said that after her husband abandoned her; she was very upset as she had no other support system. Her children's age ranged from twenty to eight months old.  She did not have permission from her husband to do any family planning, regardless of her complications in her earlier pregnancies. She had to bear children without a choice.

Their living conditions were at a bare minimum in one small empty room.  She said at night they would spread a few blankets on the floor and sleep on them and in the morning they would stack them up on the side of the room for space.  After seeing Amina nearly 15 years later, her living conditions were dismal if not nonexistent.

A lot of things transpired to get them settled over the years; during that period Amina tragically passed away in 2006, as well as Munni's husband in 2008. Munni and her kids now rent a small one bedroom low income apartment in a safe neighborhood. They have some furniture and all the basic necessities.  All her kids go to school and get very good grades.  Her second oldest daughter who never went to school was sent to a seamstress school and now takes custom orders for clothing from people in her neighborhood, which gives her sense of self-worthy by contributing to her family.

To help a family with a single mother of six like Munni takes between $120 to $150 a month which includes, rent, utilities, education for four kids, their books, clothing, some basic medical help, food and provisions.  I cannot imagine what would have happened to her family if they were not found out.  She would have had to work along with all her small children, who would not have been exposed to any form of education and definitely exploited. We at Give the Needy have been helping them over the years and feel there is no better reward to hear about their progress and well being. The turnaround in their lives has been made possible by a commitment to support them.

Helping Munni and her family has inspired us to help other single mothers with their children.

Give the Needy Foundation is similar to other charities who want to make a difference and help child poverty and exploitation. It is an organization funded and driven by caring, responsible supporters, in a cooperative effort to try and help improve the world. Our difference is that we focus on single mothers one family at a time; so our efforts make a lifetime impact.

I hope the above story will inspire you to help us, not necessarily on a monthly basis, but anything that you could contribute is helpful.  If not, we encourage you to help other charities or people in need or pass along our message. Thank you for your interest.
